First Visit Information
Your child should visit the dentist by his/her first birthday. Our
first visit is scheduled for between 40 and 60 minutes. During that
time, we will review your child’s medical and dental history with you,
introduce you and your child to the dental clinic, and possibly take
some x-rays. Dr. Mike will perform a full clinical exam. He will check
for cavities, perform an oral cancer screening, check your child’s bite,
and let you know of possible orthodontic needs for the future. We will
also review your child’s x-rays with you and answer any questions you
might have.
Our goal is to make this visit as easy and non-threatening to your child
as possible. For this reason, teeth cleaning and fluoride application
are completed at a subsequent visit.
To make this visit as easy and non-threatening as possible, we will
adopt a “tell-show-do” approach. This means, we tell your child what we
are going to do, we show him or her using a mirror or model, and then we
carefully and gently proceed with treatment.
If no cavities or other problems are found on the first visit, we will
schedule your child’s second visit for a dental cleaning, fluoride
treatment, and brushing and flossing instructions with you and your
child.
If cavities or other problems are found on the first visit, the second
visit will be a case discussion. We do not recommend that your child
attend the case discussion visit so that any issues may be discussed
openly. If there is anyone else who will be involved in the decision
making process for your child’s dental care, we would encourage him or
her to attend. At the case discussion we will cover all the proposed
treatment, give you any possible options for treatment, discuss
financial arrangements, answer all your questions, and schedule your
child’s next appointment, assuming you are comfortable with the proposed
treatment.
We strive to make
each and every visit to our office a fun one!
